Discover the Cultural Heritage of Belaraghi Village – An Authentic Ngada Experience

Belaraghi Village, Ngada Regency-Flores island

Belaraghi Village, a remarkable destination that offers a unique glimpse into the rich cultural heritage and architectural traditions of the Ngada community.

Belaraghi Village is accessible by a scenicDriving of approximately 45 hour from Aimere flores highway, nestled within a secluded forest clearing that enhances its tranquil and harmonious atmosphere. The village comprises sixteen traditional houses thoughtfully arranged in two parallel rows, showcasing the quintessential Ngada architectural style. These houses are meticulously maintained and regularly renovated, preserving the traditional design and ensuring they remain in excellent condition. Among these sixteen houses, five are designated as sao pu’u, or the original houses, easily recognized by miniature houses placed atop their roofs. Another five are categorized as sao lobo, known as the ‘last houses,’ each featuring a miniature human figure on the roof. These house types are deeply significant as they correspond to the five clans currently residing in Belaraghi. The clans also maintain sao kaka houses (“kaka” meaning ‘to share’), which are considered descendants of the sao pu’u and sao lobo houses. Intriguingly, some sao kaka houses are found in other villages, where inhabitants provide vital financial, material, and labor support to their families in Belaraghi.

At the rear of the village lies a culturally significant ritual site comprising five bhaga-like houses known as loka, representing each of the five clans. These houses are oriented towards the watu lanu, an elevated stone court framed by poles covered with ijuk fibers. This sacred site is central to the ‘bui loka’ ceremony, which serves as the initiation event for reba—the Ngada-wide New Year festivities—highlighting its importance within the cultural calendar.

Belaraghi Village stands as a testament to the enduring cultural identity and architectural legacy of the Ngada people. This destination offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience authentic traditions and engage with a living cultural landscape.
